New on View: 'Looking South’ Painting Donated by Fiduciary Trust
Current and former employees of Fiduciary Trust Company International gathered at the 9/11 Memorial Museum Wednesday for the public unveiling of "Looking South," a four-stories tall painting the firm commissioned in tribute to its 89 colleagues plus contractors and visitors killed on 9/11.
"'Looking South' is so deeply meaningful to our firm and employees, and for more than a decade it has served as a fitting tribute to the colleagues we lost. We are very pleased to be able to make this gift to the 9/11 Memorial Museum – the right permanent home for the painting," said Larry Sternkopf, president and chief operating officer of Fiduciary Trust.
The oil-on-canvas painting by New York-based artist Daniel Kohn recaptures the views from the South Tower of the World Trade Center which, until 9:59 a.m. on 9/11, had long been occupied by Fiduciary Trust. The work avoids direct reference to the tragedy while encouraging viewers to take solace in a tranquil visual interpretation of loss.
"The absolute breathtaking specialness of 'Looking South' is that it captures such a unique view and one that is no longer with us – the view looking out from inside the South Tower. It is a tremendous honor to be entrusted with this beautiful piece by Fiduciary Trust," said 9/11 Memorial President Joe Daniels.
The painting is now on view in Tribute Walk near the South Tower footprint at bedrock.
"We are humbled and privileged today to formally accept this stunning work into the Museum’s permanent collection and to make it available for millions of people to experience in proximity to the footprint of the very place that inspired it," said 9/11 Memorial Museum Director Alice M. Greenwald.
