The safety of a nation deeply wounded the Statue of Liberty stands as a symbol of freedom rising above the ashes as a beacon of hope, a guardian angel pure, immortal, and determined. As an Iraqi American artist, Diyar's appreciation of freedom comes from his experience as a refugee fleeing war-torn Iraq in 2004. This work is a tribute to the fragility of freedom through immigrant eyes. The statue represents strength and freedom. The broken crown symbolizes a wound of humiliation. The nails on the feet are symbolic of the crucifixion of Christ. The bent torch symbolizes wisdom guidance, which is mishandled and setting fire to the angel's wings. The circle on top of the left column represents life energy and creation. Within the Golden inlay is an angel welcoming new beginnings a bearer of plenty excess. Continuing down the marble detailing relieves images of adventure wonder and rebirth. At the top of the right column, an eagle is clutching the American flag, imbodying strength courage honor, and immortality. The angel is the counterpoint to the one on the left calmly ushering souls into the afterlife below the Arches and trees are mirrored in the Marble, however, Death is depicted here while universal scales cast judgment over the entrance to the burial ground. In the center of the fireball is a spinning Celtic knot extinguishing the flames while the outer ring represents the many faces of God’s protection. The angel is in turmoil the flames represent tragedy, adversity, and the loss of innocence. The smashed windows of the world trade center represent a painful past and the permanent scars to bear, however, the feathers remain resolute bearing the strength to overcome and triumph.
