The Tree That Survived
October 19, 2018
Almost a month after the 9/11 attacks, a survivor was found in the ruins. Extensively damaged with its roots and limbs snapped and its trunk blackened and burned, rescue and recovery workers pulled a Callery pear tree from the rubble. The tree was placed in the care of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and was nursed back to health. In 2010, the tree was brought to the 9/11 Memorial site.

Nodding-head figurines, or bobbleheads, have been a promotional mainstay of major league sports for decades. Typically, they reference teams and individual players beloved by loyal fans. This variant embodies the lion mascot adopted by the Los Angeles Kings ice hockey team in 2007. It also doubles as a tribute to the lion’s human namesake, Garnet Edward “Ace” Bailey, director of pro-scouting for the team, who was killed on 9/11.

Elementary School Students Send Flowers to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum

At the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, the Education team works daily with students of all ages to help them understand the 9/11 attacks and their ongoing repercussions. This week, a team of educators laid tissue-paper flowers on the 9/11 Memorial, donated by third grade students from Southside Elementary School in Cabot, Ark.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg paid tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and outlined NATO's role in the fight against terrorism in a speech at the 9/11 Memorial Museum on Wednesday.
