Resources for Commemorating 9/11 in Your Community
As the 17th anniversary of the September 11attacks approaches, communities will come together to honor those who were killed on 9/11, remember those who survived and acknowledge the sacrifice of the rescue and recovery workers.
We continue to highlight touching community observances, student engagement or local events that speak to this commitment to never forget. The 9/11 Memorial Museum offers several resources to help and inspire others to do the same within their own communities.
Hempstead’s September 11th Memorial Park, Point Lookout, L.I.
On Sept.11, 2017, the Town of Hempstead in Long Island, N.Y, unveiled its September 11th Memorial Park. With views of the beach, the Memorial features a 30-foot-long beam of recovered World Trade Center steel, a meditation plaza and a Callery pear tree grown from the 9/11 Memorial’s own Survivor Tree.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice 9/11 Tributes
On Sept. 11, 2001, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice lost 67 members of its community. In its efforts to remember those who died, the college hosts many events and tributes in September. At a memorial ceremony, the names of the alumni who died are read aloud as votive candles are placed at the base of recovered World Trade Center steel, the centerpiece of the college’s own 9/11 Memorial. Students also participate in a 9/11 flag tradition, a park clean-up day and service activities.

Travis Manion Foundation: 9/11 Heroes Runs
Travis Manion Foundation’s 9/11 Heroes Run, a national 5K race series held annually, unites communities to remember the sacrifices of the heroes of the September 11 attacks and wars since. The 9/11 Heroes Run has spread from a small grassroots event with a few hundred people in one small community in Pennsylvania in 2007, to an event that spans more than 50 cities around the world.
