More than 30,000 people took part in the 16th annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk on Sunday, recreating the heroic run of a firefighter who gave his life after racing to the Twin Towers to save lives on 9/11.
The event raises money for the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which was created to honor FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller who ran from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center with more than 60 pounds of gear on Sept. 11, 2001.
The foundation’s programs support first responders, service members who suffered catastrophic injuries and the families of military personnel killed in the line of duty. Among the participants were 2,500 cadets from West Point.
