A Look Back at 2022 With Elizabeth L. Hillman
The start of 2023 represents my first full calendar year as President and CEO of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. I look forward to the year ahead with deep appreciation and great anticipation for the future.
With the partnership and support of millions of visitors, donors, and volunteers, we are starting 2023 strong. Despite the many challenges of the pandemic, including a six-month long closure, we proudly welcomed over six million visitors to the Memorial and nearly two million to the Museum in 2022.
Last year, our mission of commemoration, education, and inspiration touched the hearts of millions of people — of all ages — across the U.S. and around the world.
In May of 2022, we marked the 20th anniversary of the formal end of rescue, recovery, and relief operations at Ground Zero. And in November, we continued our long-standing Veterans Day tradition in which Team Red, White, & Blue and other volunteers visit the Memorial to place yellow roses at the names of veterans who were killed on 9/11.
As a part of the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, our Anniversary Digital Learning Experience — a 35-minute film featuring detailed accounts of 9/11 by first responders, 9/11 survivors, and advocates — reached more than half a million students and educators across all 50 states and 18 countries. Visitors also had the opportunity to visit our special exhibition, K-9 Courage, which honored the hundreds of dogs that participated in the response to the 9/11 attacks.
Our incredible staff, volunteers, and generous supporters seized every opportunity to live out our mission and make good on our promise never to forget, ensuring 2022 was an incredibly successful and inspiring year.
I am honored to lead an organization that keeps our country’s sacred trust – telling the story of 9/11 and its ongoing impact, shining a light on the heroism we saw in its aftermath, and honoring those killed.
I am truly excited for the year ahead. Thank you for being a part of our important work.
